TUPELO - State Sen. Alan Nunnelee is a hypocrite for criticizing the federal economic stimulus program while using money from it to plug state budget holes, U.S. Rep. Travis Childers said Monday as he took aim at his potential rival for the 1st District seat.

"What a hypocrite - he should be ashamed," Childers, a Booneville Democrat, said during a Daily Journal Editorial Board meeting.

Nunnelee, a Republican from Tupelo, recently filed campaign paperwork to seek his party's nomination for the post in 2010.

He is chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, which works with its counterpart in the Mississippi House to devise the state budget.

In remarks to the editorial board, Childers noted that Nunnelee, despite his public criticism of the economic recovery program, had been willing to use stimulus money for the budget. More than $500 million from the stimulus was included in the fiscal 2010 state budget.

But Nunnelee, contacted later Monday, said the stimulus remains a costly mistake.

"It sounds to me like Mr. Childers is a little bit nervous," Nunnelee said. "I never would have voted for the stimulus package, but he did."

When asked if he had any qualms about using stimulus funds in the state budget, Nunnelee sidestepped a direct answer. Instead, he said, "I think he's trying to divert attention from a trillion-dollar mistake that's costing generations."

The Legislature usually meets from January until April, but this year it recessed for a month while details of the stimulus package were analyzed for impact on the budget.

After several recesses and special sessions, the Legislature finally reached a budget agreement just minutes before the new fiscal year began July 1.

Hmmm...differing opinions here...at least there ARE opinions...I did NOT vote for Childers as I am a stuanchly conservative voter as far as national and statewide elections are concerned...However, Congressman Childers seem to have been voting his conservative conscience since being elected, some that is driving Rahm Emanuel up a wall...I've called the congressman's office multiple times and given my opinion and basically that is if he sticks to his conservative roots on these socialist issues than I see no need to replace him when election time comes up. However, whether he can stick to his guns with Emanuel and Pelosi dogging him constantly remains to be seen...and even if he does so, he could be effectively neutered by the vindictive Pelosi...In my opinion, anyone that doesn't see the extreme harm that is being done by this administration and the terrible ideas they are trying to implement, really doesn't understand politics, people or economics...and thats sad because I still people waving the flag for the socialist ideas that are circulating right now...

Nunnellee is part of the reason that the republican party has been getting it's butt kicked lately. People are tiree of the same old conservative rhetoric with no action. The guy is owned by special interests and can't wipe his own nose without permission from Haley.

As bad as some may think Rep Childers may be, he is not a shade's difference than that of another that may replace him if he were to be defeated in seeking reelection. I voted for him and I am also one of his biggest critics. He's simply a shade of Blue versus another good man seeking to replace him that is a shade of Red.

Regardless as to which one occupies this district's rep seat, both will be obligated to lobbyist contributors. There's no getting around it and there's no chance of it not happening. That's the way the political system operates and it's not gonna change....never ever.

A legislator's opinion, vote and influence are dictated primarily by the $$$$$ it takes to fund a successful campaign and election. As our current political system exists today, legislators have no choice but to position themselves in this manner. Let's not dump on them too much as this is just the political climate of modern day.

Greed, corruption and lust are the names of the game in Washington D.C. these days!

Well let me see, I voted to elect Nancy Pelosi speaker, I voted to spend all of that money that has not helped the economy, I got really rude with a reporter that asked me where I stood on the Obamacare ripoff bill, I am not telling anyone how I fell about Obamacare bill, I do not want anyone to know where I am speaking while I am home and now I am calling someone a hypocrite because they HAD to spend money I voted to give them. Please re-elect me because I am doing such a good job!! Now that is what I call a good representative!! We are so proud of you Travis! Keep up the good work!!

Thank you Congressman Childers for calling Mr. Nunnelee out for his hypocrisy! His desire to put a career before the well-being of an entire state paints a true picture of who Alan Nunnelee is as opposed to how it wants to be perceived. Congressman Childers isn't nervous Mr. Nunnelee, because unlike you and your puppet-like actions for Guvvvvenor Barbour, the Representative believes in standing up for all and not just a few. You should be nervous that you are going to be shown for who you really are, and that's a man who is looking for a promotion over the well-being of people.

Nunnellee used stimulus money to cover up the terrible job that he did as appropriations chairman this year. He used stimulus money to balance the budget rather than making the hard cuts that are necessary. He hopes to get elected to Congress so that he doesn't have to come back to the train wreck budget that he crafted this year.

Hypocrite? That's funny Rep. Travis Childers. Two weeks ago, I called your D.C. office and asked your view on the so called "Health Care Reform" and your people said you were against until it gave Americans more freedoms. This past Thurs. I here on the radio that you're undecided on the issue, so I call, your people confirm what I heard on the radio and then they dispute my claim that a week ago you were against it. If it's taking you this long, I guess your having a tough time choosing to go against the Obama-Pelosi train. I'm a dem and I voted for you-but here lately.....I'm rethinking both! GOOD LUCK NEXT ELECTION!!!!
