 Before purchasing a Gas fireplace, Gas log, or gas insert Google dangers of ventfree.  There are 3 types of gas products -  the consumer should make theirself aware of;  Vented,  Direct vent  & Ventfree.   They all work differently, do your research to make sure you know what you are purchasing.

Vented:   usually higher BTU,  usually have a good look,  most of the heat goes up the flue system.  If fireplace does not draw correctly, it may produce soot in the home.  KEEP DAMPER ALL THE WAY OPEN WHEN USING.

Direct vent:   Many have great looking flames, some are AFUE heater & furnace rated for heating  large area's of the home, they have sealed combustion chambers.  no exhaust comes into the home such as GAS SMELL,   WATER,   or  SOOT, and they can be used in any room of the home.  May be used 24 hrs a day if need be.  Best choice for today's tight built homes.

Vent free:    All the heat & exhaust  [fumes]  comes into the room being heated.  Ventfree product  must be sized correctly for area being used in,   Requires combustion & ventilation air,  burns the oxygen out of the air in home,  need to open a window a few inches when ventfree products are being used.  suppose to be used for supplement heat only, no more than 4 hrs per day & limit use.     Common complaints   smell , soot,  sweating walls & windows,  discolored walls & ceilings,  increased respiratory issues.
