Two charged in death of black man in Attala County

KOSCIUSKO — The FBI will look into the circumstances surrounding the death of a black man in Attala County to determine if a hate crime occurred.

Daniel McMullen, special agent in charge of the FBI in Mississippi, tells the Clarion-Ledger that the case for now is being investigated by state authorities.

A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 1 for Frankie Barber and Barry Ware, both from Sallis. Each is charged with murder in the Jan. 7 slaying of Cedric Sharkey near Sallis. Barber and Ware are white.

Sheriff William Lee says the shooting appeared to have occurred after Barber and Ware confronted Sharkey, thinking he might have been involved in stealing iron or other scrap metal from Barber's property.

Lee says Sharkey died of a gunshot wound in the chest.

Have to agree with even the racists on this one. Racism may be a motive for killing or any other crime, but should be nothing more. It shouldn't matter why someone illegally kills someone else, it's still a crime, and the punishment should be the same.

americasgone, sure it makes a difference; if it was a hate crime you get the death penalty - twice! Wait, that's wrong. If you kill someone you get pardoned or either you only spend a couple years behind bars. That death penalty thing was for for something like emailing someone after they asked you not to... sorry.

DOJ statistics show that the majority of interacial violence is black on white. But you never hear of a black man being investigated for a hate crime.

If there was a murder the person should be prosecuted for that. The reason why shouldn't make any difference.
