OXFORD – Democrat Brad Morris filed paperwork on Thursday as a candidate for Congress in Mississippi’s First Congressional District.

Two independent sources also report that Democratic qualifier, former state Rep. Mark DuVall of Mantachie, is expected to withdraw from the race.

DuVall has not yet responded to a Daily Journal call about his status.

Republican Rep. Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo is seeking a second term after defeating Democratic incumbent Rep. Travis Childers of Booneville in 2008.

Today is the deadline to file qualifying papers with political parties or as an independent.

A small businessman and attorney in Oxford, Morris grew up in rural Itawamba County. He was chief of staff and a senior adviser to Childers.

Morris issued a statement as he entered the race:

“At the heart of this election is a choice of whether we have a Congress that is focused on growing the middle class or a Congress that is focused on protecting the interests of a privileged few. America is at its best when we all have an opportunity to improve ourselves and our family, no matter where we start in life. I am a product of those opportunities, and I want to give working families the voice they deserve in this election and in Congress.”

Morris said he will formally kick off his campaign with a more detailed announcement and tour of the district soon.

Party primaries are in March and the general election is Nov. 6.

Other GOP candidates are former Eupora mayor Henry Ross and Southaven businessman Robert Estes. Libertarian Danny Bedwell of Columbus also reports he'll be in the race.

Ross' campaign, which planned a district tour this week, apparently postponed it.
