OXFORD — In another surprising twist to a month-long saga, Mississippi quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has been cleared to play football just one day before the start of the season.

Three days ago, the NCAA ruled that the former Oregon quarterback had to sit out a season after enrolling at Mississippi. But the university appealed that decision and announced Friday that the NCAA Division I Subcommittee for Legislative Relief had overturned the first ruling.

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said he couldn't talk about specifics of Friday morning's appeals hearing, but was thrilled with the committee's decision.

"It's a big lift for us and the team's really excited," Nutt said. "We feel very fortunate. Jeremiah and his family were in tears they were so happy afterward.

"It's a great feeling."

Masoli is expected to be the Rebels' starting quarterback this season, though Nutt said sophomore Nathan Stanley will start against Jacksonville State on Saturday because of the short notice.

Masoli played for Oregon the past two seasons, leading the Ducks to the Rose Bowl in 2009. But he was kicked off Oregon's team earlier this summer after two run-ins with police. He pleaded guilty to a second-degree burglary charge and was also cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession.

Masoli had already received an undergraduate degree from Oregon, and decided to transfer to Ole Miss where he entered the Parks and Recreation graduate program. The NCAA will often waive a one-year residency requirement for athletes who enter a graduate program not offered at the previous school, but initially didn't clear Masoli because "the waiver exists to provide relief to student-athletes who transfer for academic reasons to pursue graduate studies, not to avoid disciplinary measures at the previous university."

Obviously, the NCAA subcommittee disagreed, and the Rebels' offense is likely better for it.

"We would like to thank the NCAA staff and subcommittee for approaching this case and all of its details with diligence and fairness," Ole Miss athletic director Pete Boone said in a released statement.

Masoli accounted for 51 total touchdowns over two seasons at Oregon, and is considered one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the country.

Sorry we missed your insignificant post in all this clutter, pragmatic. It's kinda sad when you have to come back and re-post to try to make a point.

Yes, Jackie did wrong. But just like a good ol' UM fan, you bring up the past instead of focusing on the present. And if can show me where anyone (besides you and your boyfriends) has ever referred to him by that nickname, I'd be glad to see it.

Keep it classy, UM.

I am amazed that no one had one thing to say about my Sherrill comment. So either State fans are admitting it to be true or refusing to admit that their COACHES have committed more wrongs than Masoli. Either way, I was right.

All this...

Over a children's game...

Played by children in mens' bodies...

For the edification of rif-raff sitting in the stands...

But if you get injured, tough sh*t. The NCAA won't allow you to be paid the fair market value of your effort.

When the revolution comes, will you know what's happening?

Im all for this to be honest with you. Nutt just proves he will do anything to win. Now i can see why he left Arkansas. They wanted to do it the right way up there. Keep it up Nutt I'm rooting for you. Only 2-3 more moves like this and the NCAA will be paying a visit for some recruiting reasons. Oh wait they have already named a recruiting rule after you.

Prediction:

Ole Miss 2-6 in the SEC (beats Vandy and Kentucky), 5-7 overall. Loses to MSU in Egg Bowl.

MSU 2-6 in SEC (beats Kentucky and Ole Miss), 4-8 overall. Wins Egg Bowl.

Masoli gets in trouble again by mid-season.

Actually, flynrebel, if you ask some "analysts", they'd suggest both MS schools should leave the SEC.

DCC,

(1)I think we all know UM showed last year that polls are just that -- polls.

(2)When you find out which team is playing Jackson State and Memphis, be sure to let me know.

(3) This isn't an Ole Miss board. It's an online article.

(4) Won't respond to yet again another DosChiChis unfounded and unprovable allegation (i.e. "unchristian" comment).

(5) Give one example of how I was "wrong about everything" I said last year. Everybody knows by now not to take anything you say as even a half-truth. Your fellow UM fans denounce you! But, I actually like reading your posts b/c it's so fun to pick you apart.

brewer88 what? Ole Miss followed the RULES. Now who should not be in the SEC? That would be MS State. Always second to last...

Dawgheat polls arejust that, polls. You actually have to play all 12 of those games. Well, in the case of MSU you play two or three and don't show up for the rest. Talking about easy schedules, what team is playing Jackson State and Memphis? Jacksonville State and Fresno are a lot tougher than you think, that is, if you knew anything about football. We never, ever post on your board because we don't care about MSux. So go back to your board with your un-Christian coach and your sub-par team. You were wrong about everything you said last year and you are not starting any better this go around. Happy Labor Day, Jack!

Really, DosChiChis? Really?!

The pick-up of Masoli is going to take you from being a pre-season last in the West to a "contender"?

You are the perfect reason why I don't take Ole Pissants seriously.

All of this MSU talk about thugs reminds me of a MSU thug. What was his name? Oh yea, Jackie Sherrill, cost you guys a few scholarships didn't he? Wow, recruiting violations and still couldn't muster a winning season. What was his nickname, oh yea the "walking recruiting violation", that's right.

According to this article:

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Jackie-Sherrill-s-still-got-the-old-Midas-touch?urn=ncaaf-155271

Mullen even invited him to a practice back in April to "coach him" on some things. Sounds like Mullen is wanting to walk in some familiar footprints. Call the NCAA and tell them to get their bags packed and reserve the rooms (if they ever "unreserve" their rooms in Starkvegas), they will probably be back on campus before the end of next season.

Bullies are jealous as usual. Never have anything worth talking about on their side, either BL is a terrible writer or MSU sux. I doubt Masoli will start but he will play and be a game chager. OM will be a contender for the SEC this year. MSU will be praying to Joseph Smith to get 4 wins.

I'll be surprised if either State or Ole Miss wins more than 2-3 conference games and 5-6 games overall.

There's no doubt that Masoli will help Ole Miss ON THE FIELD. He doesn't help the reputation of the university off the field, but he should probably be good for an extra win or two.
