Days after opening its online system to Toyota job seekers, the Mississippi Department of Employment Security has accepted it 10,000th application.

More than 8,700 Mississippians have applied.

Applications have poured in from 80 counties across the state and from 36 states across the country.

“The high number of applicants from across the state and country demonstrates that our electronic system provides a convenient way for everyone to apply for Toyota jobs,” MDES Executive Director Les Range said.

“We are very pleased with the progress and are encouraging everyone who is interested in helping build the Toyota Corolla, one of the world’s most popular cars, to apply for a job through our website,” Range said.

Job seekers can connect to the online application system at www.mdes.ms.gov. Part of an effort to help Toyota fill 1,350 production and maintenance jobs, the system accepts applications 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The system is accessible from any Internet-ready computer – at home, at a friend’s home, at public libraries or from one of the more than 50 WIN Job Centers across the state.

I'll take your word for it. I work too hard every day to surf government agency sites in my off hours.

Government and technology continue to bamboozle me. If a patrolman stops you on the road, he can tell within seconds if your driver's license is valid. Yet, he depends on your presentation of a card (easily counterfeited by anyone with a bit of technological savy)to determine whether you have insurance in effect. How smart is this?

And it gets better. My company operates a few units for which over-length permits are required by the State of Mississippi...The "Great and Sovereign State of Mississippi," as Ross used to intone. These permits must be renewed annually. If I send in for renewal a month before our current fleet insurance expires, the renewal will be denied. Insurance must be renewed, and a certificate faxed to the agency in question. Now, there is a website, paid for by your tax dollars, that gives the CURRENT status of insurance coverage for every carrier in the United States. It takes about four clicks of a mouse and maybe 15 seconds with DSL connection to check on the insurance coverage of any DOT authorized carrier. But the "Grand and Sovereign State of Mississippi" requires a fax from the insurance underwriter be sent to a specific agency before they will renew a rinky dink $100 per year permit.

The revolution will come. Are you prepared?

@sawmilltrash: It's not that way by design. You're giving MDES WAY too much credit.

The site hasn't changed significantly in that past couple of years.

So, no, it's not an IQ test.

It's just a very poorly designed website.

Haven't looked at the portal in question, but is it possible that the opaqueness of the site is a screening tool? After all, your d*mned-fool brother-in-law can't build a Corolla, you know. Toyota workers have to be smarter than the average bear.

Just askin'...

I agree with both of your statements. The only way MDES could make their site more convenient or user friendly is to require applicants to chisel their resumes into stone tablets before submitting.

Also, I still ask the burning question, of the applications received, how many have a viable chance at being hired? How many are qualified? If you get 10k and file 13 9k of them, what have you gained?

There is NOTHING CONVENIENT about that MDES website!!

I challenge a white collar job seeker to complete a decent profile on that site in under 2 hours!!

One would think that they would have done something to fix/update that archaic website BEFORE they started taking Toyota applications.

Now back to the actual topic at hand. Only 10,000 applications so far?

What happened to the media projections of 300,000 to 400,000?

At the current pace, they're on track for about 40,000 tops.

If you consider that there is probably a significant drop off in the application rate after the first week or so, then they might get only 20,000-30,000.
