Tons of good questions this week, and nearly all of them dealt with football. No surprise, considering players report for preseason camp in three days. So, I've got tons of (hopefully good) answers for you.

Q: Are there any guys planning to walk on to the football this fall that we should take note of?

A: Several, according to the guys at BulldawgJunction.com. One notable name already on campus: Randy Moulds, son of former MSU standout and ex-NFL player Eric Moulds. Randy, a defensive back and wide receiver, was supposed to have played last year for Erie Community College (Buffalo, N.Y.), but he is not listed on the 2009 roster or in the stats. And Eric supposedly was hired as an assistant coach there, but he's not listed on the current staff.

Other walk-ons that are on campus: OL Ben Beckwith, Benton Academy; LB Ethan McKee, West Lauderdale; K Tyler McMahan, Charlotte, N.C.; DB Asian Ruff, Itawamba AHS (Fulton); DB Dexter Shelton, West Point; WR Krisjon Wilkerson, St. Stanislaus.

Q: As far as the QB race goes, what will be the deciding factor(s) as to who gets the most snaps or a platoon situation?

A: At the risk of giving an oversimplified answer, it'll come down to who performs better in preseason camp. Now, a lot goes into that, of course. Such as, how accurate can Chris Relf be throwing the football, and how thoroughly he and Tyler Russell know the offense so that there's more reacting than thinking on the field

Q: How much is freshman QB Dylan Favre actually pushing the other two guys, or is he way behind like any freshman would be?

A: Hard to say before August camp starts, as coaches aren't allowed to observe summer workouts, and neither are we. But by all accounts, Favre has done well since enrolling in June, but I really don't think he'll overtake anyone this year.

Q: Is Favre going to redshirt, or will it depend on how well he does in August practice? Also, when is the deadline to redshirt players?

A: Players aren't redshirted until after the season, and coach Dan Mullen said last year that he doesn't even think about redshirting people until about midseason. Ideally, Favre would take a redshirt, but that'll depend upon the health of the two guys in front of him.

Q: What's the status of Daniel Stegall?

A: He's no longer on the team. Stegall walked on as a quarterback last year after quitting pro baseball, but he left the team this past spring to focus on schoolwork.

Q: What is the status of the QB from Tupelo, Chris Garrett, who's transferring from LSU? Word has it he was seen in Baton Rouge on Thursday with his parents asking Les Miles to release him to Ole Miss also.

A: He's still making up his mind. He's told me that, per the conditions of his scholarship release, MSU is the only SEC school he can accept an athletic scholarship from this year. He could, of course, walk on elsewhere and get a scholarship the next year. I've heard nothing substantial regarding his considering Ole Miss.

Q: Is William Shumpert getting any snaps at fullback?

A: Hard to say how much he'll contribute. Fullback is a deep position, with Patrick Hanrahan and Sylvester Hemphill bringing a year's experience to the table, and Adrian Marcus made waves in the spring, although he's not listed on the updated roster, which might not mean anything since he's a walk-on.

Q: Are we still looking at QB Stephen Rivers from Athens, Ala.?

A: Rivers' interest level in MSU is still listed as "high," and I see no reason why the Bulldogs wouldn't pursue him.

Q: Do you have any status update on when signee Michael Carr will arrive on campus?

A: The receiver from West Point will report Monday along with everybody else. He wanted to enroll in the summer but had to wait on an ACT score, and he's still awaiting NCAA clearance, but that's just a matter of time.

Q: Does MSU athletics try to hit up our more prominent athletes for monetary gifts? Such as Moulds, Erick Dampier, Will Clark, etc. We don't currently have anyone that has the status of Caveman (Eli) Manning, but how aggressive are we in getting these type contributions?

A: Dampier gave $500,000 to MSU's basketball practice facility, which should be completed by February. And a former track athlete, who wishes to remain anonymous, gave $100,000 to the track and field facility overhaul. Said AD Scott Stricklin, "We're fortunate to have some alums who give back."

Q: Does MSU have the funds (outside of the athletic department's budget) to keep up with what Mullen would request in pay once we start seeing real results? Years ago, the answer would be no, but is that still the case? We have got to do our best to keep this guy.

A: Stricklin didn't want to paint himself into a corner when asked this question, and understandably so. It was an interesting answer he gave nonetheless:

"That depends on what the new contract is. It depends on what bigger means. It's hard to speculate, because you don't' know where the market's going. I want to value coaches who have success and coaches who are talented, but you also want to make smart decisions with your money.

"In general, there's usually not just one person that can do a job well. I think in athletics in general, we haven't helped our industry by the way we've handled coaches' contracts. I think we over-value names, when history shows that coaches who, quote-unquote, aren't name coaches can end up being just as successful, and they don't usually cost as much.

"We're going to be aggressive, but we're also going to be smart."

Update on Carr: He has received NCAA clearance and will report along with the other players Monday, according to his high school coach. I'm still trying to confirm that from MSU. Had he not received clearance, though, he wouldn't have been able to join the team until getting it.
