Even in Mississippi, it’s about Pelosi

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is America’s latest political boogeyman, uh, boogeywoman.

Pundits, campaign leaders and political observers agree that this campaign season, she’s the new national target, in the tradition of U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts or GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The California Democrat also is unwittingly helping Republicans raise money and causing more than a few headaches for the more conservative members of her party, like U.S. Rep. Travis Childers of Booneville.

Firenancypelosi.com is a Republican-sponsored website that’s gained traction since the Obama Administration passed health care reform in March. So far, it’s brought in more than $1.5 million for the GOP’s push to regain congressional seats.

In North Mississippi’s 1st District race for Congress, the anti-Pelosi mantra is a staple with state Sen. Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo, who’s seeking to unseat Childers.

As late as Friday, Nunnelee was verbally blasting her via headline networking site Twitter.

Over the July 4 weekend, at the traditional Jacinto political speaking, Nunnelee spoke for several minutes about his legislative record and his political views.

As he closed his talk, he said “thank you” to the listeners, and then, not to forget his favorite line he reminded them, “Oh, and I’ll vote to fire Nancy Pelosi.” It got good applause.

In politics, using a national bugaboo is nothing new.

“When I heard about ‘Fire Nancy Pelosi,’ I immediately thought about Jesse Helms,” said Ferrel Guillory, a Louisiana native and former journalist now teaching Southern politics at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Helms was an ultra-conservative U.S. North Carolina senator and an anti-integration lightning rod.

Helms used the liberal, politically royal Kennedy as his campaign foil through the years, even though they never ran against each other for anything.

“Teddy Kennedy raised millions of dollars for Jesse Helms, whenever he said, ‘We’ve got to defeat Teddy Kennedy,’” Guillory recalled.

Guillory and some other political observers say the “Fire Nancy Pelosi” gets a much bigger reaction or “bounce” than blasting President Obama.

Pelosi, they say, has attributes that strike a negative chord with some voters: She’s Italian, she’s Catholic, she’s liberal, she’s from San Francisco, she’s a woman.

In Northeast Mississippi, Nunnelee upbraids Pelosi every chance he gets. His campaign e-mails and remarks always include something about dethroning Pelosi.

“The citizens of the 1st Congressional District understand that Nancy Pelosi and her appointed committee chairmen control the legislative agenda of Congress,” said Nunnelee campaign consultant Morgan Baldwin of Tupelo.

“This liberal leadership and their agenda do not mesh with 1st District voters and their values,” he noted, claiming Childers has been their “enabler” with his party vote for her as speaker.

Childers campaign adviser Brad Morris is quick to respond.

“Nancy Pelosi keeps coming up because Alan Nunnelee can’t run on his record and can’t run against Travis’,” Morris said. “I can’t say I blame him” for playing the Pelosi card.

Morris turned questions to Nunnelee’s record as a state senator with budget-cutting votes affecting education and teacher jobs.

“He’s just waving a red herring,” Morris added. “Nancy Pelosi is not on the Nov. 2 ballot.”

Months ago, Childers had a straightforward answer to criticism that he voted for Pelosi over Republican John Boehner of Ohio: What did you expect me to do? Vote for a Republican? What do you think he would have done for me, if I had? Nothing.

Pelosi appointed Childers to seats on committees for agriculture and financial services.

State Democratic Party Executive Director Sam Hall reacted much the same way as Morris but said he believes Childers has voted his own mind, not as a Pelosi pawn.

“He’s been an independent vote for North Mississippi,” Hall said.

Brad White, Mississippi Republican Party chairman, said Nunnelee’s attack on Childers by using Pelosi crystalizes what they perceive to be public displeasure with the direction Congress is taking.

“Obviously, if you want to change the direction, you start with changing the people driving the boat,” White said. “Politics is a team sport in Washington and Congressman Childers is on the Pelosi team.”

That may be one of the few differences between the candidates, both pro-gun, pro-life, fiscal conservatives.

That’s why Nunnelee wants to “nationalize” the race, while Childers probably wants to keep it local, Guillory speculates.

“The GOP challenger against a conservative Democrat wants to paint him as part of the national Democrats,” Guillory said. “Clearly, they’ve done polling that says Nancy Pelosi gets the juices flowing.”

While you’d hardly believe one rural district in North Mississippi matters on the national political map, it’s a numbers game for the GOP to take the House back, one seat at a time.

“The 1st District is one skirmish in that battle,” Guillory said. “This is not a local race any more. None of them is.”

No, Travis, we did not expect you to vote for a Republican. But you could have voted for/supported a fiscal conservative Blue Dog Democrat for Speaker! Allen Nunnelee is the only viable candidate in the race who will promise to vote against Pelosi at the next opportunity! At this point, all I am hoping for is a candidate who knows how to balance a checkbook and it's obviously not Travis Childers!

It's a really sad day when these two clowns are all we have to vote for. If Nunnelle wants to win this election he better spend a little time focusing on issues that Travis Childers has been for or against and not so much on Nancy Pelosi. She has her own battle in Cali to deal with. Travis Childers lost my vote because of his record. Check his voting record. Also check his voting record on the "You Cut" initiative. These are no brainer cuts that this man is voting against. If he really were representing the people of North Ms he would be supporting some of these ideas to reduce our deficit. Attacking Nancy Pelosi is fine and good, but Nunelle better focus on his opponent instead of her. Alan, I hope for your sake you read the online paper and read these comments. Leave the tired old "Nancy Pelosi boogywoman" politics alone and move on to your opponent.

Where are the GOOD SOLID INDEPENDANTS WHEN YOU NEED THEM!

beaver you're out of your mind...Satan CANT perform miracles...thats moronic...and bratt, you are probably one of the only people in NMiss who has your opinion of Nancy Pelosi...She absolutely is NOT intellectual...(you might take a peek at her college grades...makes Bush and Kerry look like geniuses...)

Third degree you're right on except for I believe that many more illegals than you stated will be covered...why are liberals so shortsided? Are they stupid or ignorant? Both? This country can only be fixed utilizing conservative principles...I'm talking about REAL conservatism practiced by REAL conservatives...good luck finding that kind of animal...

Folks around here won't understand the deep implications of the Pelosi healthcare bill until it personally affects them and their finances. In less than 4 months, the Bush tax cuts end, which will directly affect EVERYONE.

Pelosi's healthcare cost, $1.5 TRILLION, will make all taxes soar. You pay taxes on gasoline, food, groceries, etc. The public option will put private insurance companies out of business and lead to a single-payer govt. take-over of healthcare.

Everyone will be required to buy an insurance policy that is approved by the govt.IF you don't get the policy, you PAY and fine or go to JAIL. A family earning $44,000 b/4 taxes will pay a $5,300 premium per year and out of pocket $2000 per year.

Medicade and medicare will be drastically cut. Seniors will be hardest hit.

Illegals will be covered. (2.5 million of them)

What have they paid in? Nothing!

If we let the Democrats stay in office, we get exactly what we deserve. Crouch down and lick their hands and may your chains rest lightly on your back, IF you support any dems. VOTE them all out every election and let's get our democracy back!

Nancy Pelosi IS a boogey(wo)man, just look at her. (smile)

Seriously though, this is the woman who told the american people that they (Congress) would have to pass the healthcare bill in order for us to see what is in it. That is a glassbackwards way of legislating laws and not a practice that the American people need. They need forthright frankness, communication and complete understanding of what laws are being passed and this Congress, as well as past Congress, are not properly informing their constituents of the laws they pass. They piecemeal laws and insert laws that have nothing to do with what they tout, such as other laws contained within the healthcare debacle that have absolutely nothing to do with health. These gigantic 3000 page laws, that even THEY DO NOT READ must be stopped.

Please don't insult Catholics by saying Nancy Pelosi is Catholic. She is an apostate who promotes the mass murder of babies!

Mikoma, what about all the Repubikens who voted for the bailout package? Remember, this idea was first suggested by a REPUBIKEN, Mr. George Bush.

obama=amabo, I fear Nunnelee will do more to destroy the U.S. than Obama EVER will.

And BTW, Satan can work miracles too, when it suits his purpose. Just because Nunnelee had his sight restored "miraculously" doesn't necessarily mean God did it.

Childers split his britches when he voted for Pelosi for Speaker. He could have voted for a fellow Blue Dog Dem and helped himself in this election. Now we know that the choice is clear. Alan Nunnelee is the ONLY viable candidate in the race who will vote to retire Pelosi! Travis Childers will not make that statement! Also, why did Childers take so long in deciding not to vote for the devastating Health Bill? And why did Childers vote FOR the 750 Billion stimulus package that has done NOTHING to stop the nation's job losses but IS helping to destroy our Nation financially? CHILDERS HAS TO GO AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Well, looks like today is the Online Daily Journal bash Nancy Pelosi day.

The Conservatives in the Pelosi bashing gave the following statement which realy tells me something.

"Pelosi, they say, has attributes that strike a negative chord with some voters: She’s Italian, she’s Catholic, she’s liberal, she’s from San Francisco, she’s a woman."I really like this last one: "she's a woman." And this one: "She's Italian" and this I added: She's also an American. And she's a woman alright, an accomplished woman, a woman who ,I dare say, has more brains than Nunnell, Childers, Guillory(what tribe is this), White and the whole kit and caboodle of blowhard politicians and pundits involved in this online Journal political bashing.

Furthermore, I'm reminded by this article that my home state of Mississippi always seems to rank on the bottom, or scraping the bottom, when comparing it to all the other states. It's not really hard to understand why, is it?

And, I sincerely believe that there is a day close at hand when the people of Mississippi will wish they had a representative in congress they could truly be proud of -- one like Nancy Pelosi.

dman I am certainly no defender of Nunnelee--and I am so sorry you have lost a child as no one who hasn't experienced that can truly understand how bad it is. However, for him to claim a miracle from God should be viewed as a good thing and not as bad as you are doing. Everyone doesn't experience a miracle such as he claims and to condemn him for experiencing one isn't fair and should not be seen as a negative to his character. The thing that I don't appreciate about the claim in his commercial, is the part where it seems to say that the miracle he experienced is qualified only by the fact that he has "vision" when miracles don't need qualification. Yes he seemed to politicize a blessing in this case.

May God's blessings be upon you and my family's prayers are with you on your loss.

Alan Nunnelee makes my skin crawl. He is typical of this pseudo-Christian right winger. According to his tv ads, God worked a miracle and gave him sight. What does he say to someone like me who had a child die? Does he believe that God loves him more than my daughter? This is a bad man.

Even though Pelosi will not be on the ballot in Mississippi in Nov., a vote for her to remain speaker of the house will be on the ballot. Childers make his bed with Pelosi and he has to sleep in the bed he made for himself.

Childers painted himself as part of the national democrat party, that is not a red herring. It is a red herring to paint Childers as a conservative.
