Sunday alcohol sales

Will they or won't they?

Tupelo's current City Council might be the most likely of all its predecessors to approve Sunday alcohol sales. Most members either support the move (with a few contingencies, like afternoon hours only) or are at least open to the suggestion.

But they are unlikely to bring up the issue themselves. It would require a community member or group to push the topic. The Tupelo Restaurant Association pushed the issue last time (2004), but I'm not sure members are up for it again.

I'm curious to know what blog readers think. Pro or con?

I have never understood why Tupelo has this law anyway, people that drink will just buy enough on Saturday; or just go to a bootlegger. This law needs to go, it will create revenue. I know all the bleeding hearts will say no, I guess because people go to church on Sunday. This is simple, people drink, and do drugs everyday of the week. Maybe even some of the people who sit beside you in church as well.

Why not, Alcoholics will be just that. Not selling alcohol on Sundays only leaves the choice to go to a bootlegger. Sell alcohol on Sunday and make it harder for the bootlegger to make profits.

And also if Starkville passes that would put more pressure on Tupelo because I'm sure Oxford will consider it next. Even limited sales would work out alright.

Sunday alcohol sales had been on the city council adgenda many times in the past. Numerous conventions and concerts have been lost due to the sales issue. If Sunday alcohol sales were allowed the CVB and the coliseum would have more bargining power to book events that would impact tourism dollars. Hopefully, the new leaders of the city will realize this and pass the Sunday alcohol sales. Yes, there are pros and cons....but tourism dollars speaks louder than the cons.

So, more alcohol is the answer to more income?

If Starkville passes Sunday sales I think Tupelo will be next. It does have cons but i think the pros outweigh the cons. With tax revenue low like it is now I think you would have to be pretty silly to not consider Sunday sales. Also, Sunday sales could bring in more concerts and resturants to the city which creates more jobs.
