JACKSON - A state Senate committee voted Wednesday to recommend that Butch Brown keep his job as executive director of the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

The matter now moves to the full Senate, which is scheduled vote Thursday on whether to reconfirm Brown to the $144,354-a-year job.

Brown was first nominated as MDOT director in 2001 and confirmed in 2002. He was fired by one group of elected transportation commissioners in November 2004, then rehired six weeks later when one of the three commissioners retired and a new one took office. Brown was confirmed a second time in 2005.

State law says the MDOT director must be confirmed by the Senate every four years.

The nomination is Senate Nomination 76.
