Fulton golfers Ally McDonald and Chad Ramey have qualified for this year's United States Golf Association Junior Amateur Championships.

 

McDonald, who will be a senior this fall at Itawamba AHS, will play in the girls tournament scheduled for July 19-24 at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, N.C.

 

Ramey, the state's Class 4A medalist for the state champion IAHS team this spring, will play in the boys tournament scheduled for the same dates at Egypt Valley Golf Club in Ada, Mich. Ramey will be a freshman this fall at Mississippi State.

 

Belden's Noah West, who will be a junior this fall at Tupelo High School, finished 10th overall this week in the AJGA Rome Classic in Rome, Ga. West, a member of the Golden Wave's 6A state championship team, started the final round in 40th place.

Rain Delay in Pearl

We are in an on-going, 40 minutes and counting, rain delay in the Class 1A state championship series opener between Myrtle and St. Aloysius at Trustmart Park in Pearl.

 

Play was stopped in the top of the first with Myrtle at bat.

Mooreville postpones baseball reunion

Mooreville High School postponed its state championship baseball teams reunion scheduled for Saturday at the baseball complex because of weather concerns.

 

Troopers coach Rex Berryman said the reunion, which will honor players from Mooreville's eight state championship teams, has been re-scheduled for 4-6 p.m. next Friday. Following a reception, the players will be honored between 6-6:30, prior to the Troopers' first-round MHSAA playoff series game against Ruleville.

 

Berryman, the state's all-time winningest baseball coach, is retiring after 38 seasons at the Lee County school.

Teena Bender, former Baldwyn, Ole Miss hoops star dies

Former two-time Daily Journal Player of the Year in basketball (1986-87), DeTeena "Teena" Bender, 41, died Thursday after a lengthy illness.

 

She averaged 22 points and 14 rebounds per game during her high school playing days at Baldwyn High School. She went on to play four seasons (1988-91) for Ole Miss and was the Lady Rebels' team captain her senior season.

 

She was working in Baldwyn as a paralegal at the time of her death.

East Union Chris Basil wins 400th game

East Union baseball coach Chris Basil, 43, won his 400th career game Saturday when his Urchins defeated New Site, 2-0, in a Division 1-2A road game. He is only one of 25 coaches in the state to win 400 or more games.

Mooreville to honor state championship baseball teams

n Mooreville High School’s eight state championship baseball teams – 1976, 1978, 1987, 1992, 1994, 2001, 2002 and 2005 – will be honored with a reunion April 24 at the baseball field.



There will be a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. in the baseball complex behind Bud Tally Field.



The players will be honored between 6 and 6:30 p.m. prior to the Troopers’ game against Mantachie.

Belmont's Page signs with Northeast

Belmont girls basketball player Anna Brooke Page signed a national letter of intent Friday with Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville.

 

Page, a 5-foot-11 forward, averaged 20 points per game in leading the Lady Cardinals to a 3A state championship. She was named the Daily Journal's 2009-10 Player of the Year.

Max Holman signs with Rebels

Max Holman, a three-time state cross country champion and three-time state champion in track, signed a national letter of intent Wednesday to run for Ole Miss.

 

Holman, a senior at Tupelo High School,  is the state's three-time winner of the Gatorade Runner of the Year award.
